Mars Needs Moms
Short description
Milo is a nine-year-old boy who resents his mother's rules about eating vegetables, doing chores and going to bed on time. After a particularly bad argument, he wishes she would disappear, and Martians arrive on Earth and abduct her. Realizing how much he needs her, Milo stows away on the alien spacecraft and travels to Mars, where he joins forces with a technician named Gribble and a Martian girl named Ki to bring his mother home.
The film was directed by Simon Wells, who wrote the screenplay with Wendy Wells. It is his sixth feature as director, following An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, Balto, The Prince of Egypt and The Time Machine. Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steven J. Boyd produced, and the cast includes Seth Green and Seth Robert Dusky as Milo, Joan Cusack as Mom, Dan Fogler as Gribble, Breckin Meyer as an alien and Elisabeth Harnois as Ki, with 21 credited cast and 56 credited crew members.
Released in March 2011, the film had a budget of 150 million USD and took 39 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from 23,615 votes, while on TMDB it has 6 out of 10 from 816 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 116 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Each black suit has a red vertical stripe on the right side, a green vertical stripe on the left side, and about 65 sensors placed in specifically designated areas. These markers are intended to help the controlled and static cameras.
- Berkeley Breathed’s book "Mars Needs Moms," on which the film "Mars Needs Moms" is based, came about after a quarrel between his wife and son. The main character is named Milo in both the book and the film, just like Breathed’s son.
- Magical digital technologies allowed the 35-year-old actor (Seth Green) to play a 9-year-old boy (Mylo).
- The Martian language was the result of the actors’ collective creativity. They invented it directly during the voice recording process.
- Here's what Breathed himself says: "The movie wouldn't exist if, on August 10, 2006, there hadn't been a half-eaten plate of cauliflower left on the Breathed's table. Young Milo, age 5, threw a tantrum and yelled something terrible at his mother, bringing her to tears. I had to explain to my screaming son what he would feel if his mother, whom he supposedly didn't love, was suddenly taken away – I made it up on the spot – by Martians! That night, I wrote the book."
- Every day the actors dressed in the same clothes. The same outfits (a black tight-fitting suit), hairstyles (hair swept back to keep it off their faces) and makeup (black dots placed in specific locations). All the actors wore identical black tight-fitting suits, but each had patches of a certain color to avoid confusion. Seth’s was burgundy, Mindy’s was lilac, and Elizabeth’s was green.
