King of Thorn

A global pandemic caused by the Medusa virus turns infected people into stone. To preserve a portion of humanity, a group of people is placed into cryogenic sleep in hopes that a cure will be discovered in the future. When a young woman named Kasumi and others finally awaken, they find themselves in a transformed world overrun by sharp thorns and dangerous monsters. The survivors must struggle to stay alive while trying to understand what happened to civilization during their slumber.

Directed by Kazuyoshi Katayama, this Japanese animated fantasy and science fiction film followed his 1988 work Appleseed. The screenplay was written by Katayama and Hiroshi Yamaguchi. The voice cast includes Kana Hanazawa as Kasumi Ishiki, Kohsei Hirota as Alexandro Pecchino, Misaki Kuno as Alice, Tsutomu Isobe as Ivan Coral Vega, Sayaka Ohara as Katherine Turner, and Ayako Kawasumi as Laura Owen. The production involved companies such as dentsu, Bandai Visual, TV Tokyo, and KADOKAWA, with a credited crew of 103 people.
