Anna Karenina is unhappily married to Karenin, a senior imperial official much older than she is. Travelling from Saint Petersburg to Moscow to visit her brother, she meets Vronsky, a cavalry officer, and the attraction between them quickly turns into a secret affair. In the closed world of nineteenth-century Russian high society, such a relationship cannot stay hidden for long, and the resulting scandal threatens Anna's position, her marriage and her son.

The film came sixth in a directorial career of fourteen features, following Immortal Beloved in 1994 and followed by ivans xtc. in 2000. Sophie Marceau plays Anna opposite Sean Bean as Vronsky, with James Fox as Karenin, Alfred Molina as Levin, Mia Kirshner as Kitty and Fiona Shaw as Lydia among a credited cast of forty-one. Bruce Davey produced, and the production was mounted by Warner Bros. Pictures with Icon Entertainment International, Icon Productions and Studio Trite across Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Made for a budget of 35 million US dollars, the film runs 108 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 168 votes, indicating a modest response from viewers.
