Rebecca

Rebecca follows a young woman working as a companion to an American woman in Monte Carlo. She meets Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower still mourning his wife Rebecca, and after a quick courtship they marry. He takes her home to Manderley, his family's grand estate on the English coast, where she finds herself measured against the memory of her predecessor. The household staff, above all the housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, keeps Rebecca's presence alive, and the new bride struggles to find her place as her husband remains distant and haunted by the past.

Ben Wheatley directed this adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel for Working Title Films, with a screenplay by Jane Goldman, Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel. It was Wheatley's seventh feature, arriving between Free Fire and In the Earth. Lily James plays the new Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer plays Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas plays Mrs. Danvers. Keeley Hawes, Ann Dowd and Sam Riley appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 58 and a crew of 253.

The film was released in October 2020. Audience responses were mixed but not hostile: on IMDb it holds 6.1 from roughly 50,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 235 reviews places professional opinion slightly below those audience scores.
