Harriet is a biographical drama about Harriet Tubman, an enslaved woman in nineteenth-century America who escapes to freedom and then returns repeatedly to the South to lead others out. Working through the network known as the Underground Railroad, she helps numerous enslaved people reach safety in the North and Canada in the years before the Civil War, putting herself at continual risk as a wanted fugitive.
Cynthia Erivo plays Tubman, with Leslie Odom Jr. as the abolitionist William Still, Janelle Monáe as Marie Buchanon, Clarke Peters as Ben Ross and Vanessa Bell Calloway as Rit Ross. Kasi Lemmons directed and wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard; Debra Martin Chase, Gregory Allen Howard and Kim Roth produced. The film runs 125 minutes and was released in November 2019. It is Lemmons's fifth feature as director, following Eve's Bayou, The Caveman's Valentine, Talk to Me and Black Nativity, and arriving before Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
Made for a modest budget, the film returned more than twice that amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from roughly 36,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from around 961 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 233 reviews places critical opinion slightly below the audience scores.
