Peace Hotel

Peace Hotel is a 1995 Hong Kong action crime film with western elements, set in China around the 1930s. Chow Yun-fat plays Wong Ah Ping, a man who once wiped out the gang that murdered his wife and then walked away from that life. He builds an inn called the Peace Hotel, a sanctuary where anyone in danger can take shelter, and lays down a rule that no one is turned away and no blood is spilled inside. A mysterious woman, Shau Siu Man, arrives seeking refuge from a gang pursuing her, and the gang leader demands she be handed over or the hotel will be taken by force. Ping must weigh his promise against the threat to everyone under his roof.

The film is the first directed by Wai Ka-Fai, who wrote the screenplay with Chow Yun-fat. His later directing work includes Wu Yen, Running on Karma, Mad Detective and Detective vs. Sleuths. Cecilia Yip plays Shau Siu Man, and the credited cast runs to 38 performers. The production was handled by Golden Princess Film Production Limited with Cassia Hill Production Ltd., and it took about 3 million USD worldwide.

On IMDb the rating stands at 6.1/10 from 1,400 votes, and on TMDB it is 5.9/10 from 42 votes, a modest reception from a small sample of viewers.
