The One and Only Ivan

Ivan is a silverback gorilla who lives in a communal enclosure inside a suburban shopping mall, where he performs for visitors alongside an older elephant named Stella and a dog called Bob. He has only faint memories of the jungle where he was captured and of the family he lost there. That changes with the arrival of Ruby, a young elephant recently separated from her family in the wild. Her distress pushes Ivan to confront questions about his own past, where he came from and where he might belong, and to look for a way to change the animals' situation.

The film is directed by Thea Sharrock, the second of the five features listed for her, following Me Before You and preceding Wicked Little Letters and The Beautiful Game. Mike White wrote the screenplay, and Angelina Jolie is among the producers as well as providing the voice of Stella. Bryan Cranston plays Mack, while Sam Rockwell voices Ivan, Brooklynn Prince voices Ruby, Danny DeVito voices Bob, and Ariana Greenblatt appears as Julia.

Released in August 2020, the film runs 93 minutes and blends comedy, drama and family material. It holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from around 14,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 651 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 6.2 from 118 reviews, placing it below the TMDB audience score and close to the IMDb figure.
