A Dog's Way Home follows Bella, a dog who lives with Lucas, a young medical student. When circumstances separate her from him, she ends up far from home and sets out on a long journey to get back, covering hundreds of miles of wilderness along the way. Her bond with Lucas drives her forward, and she meets various people and animals who leave a mark on her travels.
Charles Martin Smith directed the film, which sits between Dolphin Tale 2 and A Christmas Gift from Bob in his filmography. W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon wrote the screenplay, and Cameron produced it with Gavin Polone. Bryce Dallas Howard voices Bella, with Jonah Hauer-King as Lucas, Alexandra Shipp as Olivia, Ashley Judd as Terri, Edward James Olmos as Axel and Wes Studi as Captain Mica among the 25 credited cast members.
Released in January 2019 and running 96 minutes, the film is a co-production between China and the United States. Against an 18 million dollar budget, it earned 81 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.4 from 1,200 votes. The critics' rating of 5.4 from 79 reviews is lower than both audience scores.
