The Eight Hundred

In 1937, as Shanghai falls under attack, a group of Chinese soldiers makes a stand inside a warehouse across the river from the city's foreign concessions. Numbering roughly eight hundred and drawn from a mix of regular troops, deserters and ordinary men, they are surrounded by a far larger Japanese force. Their orders are to hold the building, and the fight stretches over several days while onlookers on the opposite bank watch what happens. The story follows the defenders and their commander as they face the siege together.

Guan Hu directed the film and shares screenplay credit with Zhao Ningyu and Zhao Dongling. It followed his Mr. Six (2015) and My People, My Country (2019), and came before The Sacrifice (2020), Black Dog (2024), Rescue at Dongji (2025) and A Man and a Woman (2026). The cast is led by Wang Qian-Yuan, Zhang Yi, Huang Zhizhong, Jiang Wu, Ou Hao and Du Chun, with 31 credited performers and 95 credited crew members. Made for about 80 million US dollars, it took roughly 461 million US dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 8,300 votes, and on TMDB it holds 7 out of 10 from around 354 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 27 reviews places it close to the IMDb figure and slightly below the TMDB score.
