Arthur Christmas
Short description
Arthur Christmas is an animated family comedy from 2011. Santa's operation at the North Pole is a high-tech affair, staffed by elves and running with military precision under the supervision of Steve, Santa's efficient elder son and heir apparent. When one child out of hundreds of millions is missed on Christmas Eve, Steve and Santa treat it as an acceptable margin of error. Arthur, Santa's younger son, a well-meaning but clumsy lover of all things Christmas, disagrees, and sets out on an unauthorized mission to deliver the forgotten present before dawn.
Sarah Smith directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Peter Baynham; it was the first feature she directed, followed by Ron's Gone Wrong in 2021. Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Carla Shelley produced, and Aardman made it with Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures. The voice cast includes James McAvoy as Arthur, Hugh Laurie as Steve, Bill Nighy as Grandsanta, Jim Broadbent as Santa, Imelda Staunton as Mrs Santa and Ashley Jensen as Bryony.
Against a budget of 99 million USD, the film took 147 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from 73,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8/10 from 1,679 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2/10 from 167 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the cartoon, there is a moment when Santa Claus mentions that he is 136 years old. But this is physically impossible, as Malcolm has been working as Santa Claus for the last 70 years, and before him, Santa Claus himself served for 70 years, so he must be at least 140 years old.
