King Lear
Short description
An elderly king decides to divide his realm among his three daughters based on their expressions of love for him. He banishes his youngest daughter, Cordelia, because she refuses to flatter him, while granting power to his two older daughters, Goneril and Regan. Once in control, the two older sisters turn against their father, driving him into exile. This decision leads to a collapse of both the state and the family, resulting in war and chaos as characters like the Earl of Gloucester also face betrayal. This adaptation of the William Shakespeare tragedy is set in a fictional, heavily militarized version of 21st-century London.
The drama was directed and written by Richard Eyre, following his previous work on The Children Act earlier in 2018. The film stars Anthony Hopkins in the title role, with Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, and Florence Pugh playing his daughters. The cast also includes Jim Broadbent and Jim Carter.
