In 1912 England, the affluent Birling family is celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft when a police inspector named Goole arrives at their home. He tells them that a young woman has died by suicide and that he intends to question everyone present. As the evening unfolds, it becomes clear that each member of the household had some connection to the dead woman, and the comfortable assumptions of the family give way to a reckoning with their own conduct.
