Lara is a fifteen-year-old with a place at a prestigious ballet school in Brussels, where she moves with her father and younger brother. She has trained seriously and is determined to become a professional dancer, but her body does not respond to the demands of the discipline the way she needs it to. Lara was born a boy, and while she pursues hormone treatment and the physical transformation she wants, the pressure of the school and the expectations around her build as she works toward a performance that will show what she can do.

Lukas Dhont directed and co-wrote the film with Angelo Tijssens; it was Dhont's first feature, ahead of Close in 2022 and Coward in 2026. Victor Polster plays Lara, with Arieh Worthalter as her father Mathias, and Oliver Bodart, Tijmen Govaerts, Katelijne Damen and Nele Hardiman among the thirty credited cast. The production was a Belgian, Dutch and Netherlands Antilles co-production.

Released in 2018 and running 105 minutes, Girl drew a critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 63 reviews, somewhat above its audience score of 7.1/10 on TMDB. On IMDb it holds a comparably solid standing, with the vote counts indicating a widely seen film rather than a niche one.
