Death Race 2 is set in the near future, when a collapsing American economy and soaring violent crime lead to a network of private, profit-driven prisons. The worst of them is Terminal Island, where gangs and hardened killers hold sway. Carl Lucas, convicted of killing police officers, arrives to serve his sentence just as a ruthless television producer, September Jones, turns the prison's brutal vehicle battles into a broadcast spectacle. Inmates compete in heavily armed cars for a single prize: freedom, if they survive. When Lucas learns there is a price on his head, the race becomes his only way out.
The film is a prequel to Death Race, directed by Roel Reiné as the fourth of his 21 features, following The Marine 2 and preceding Bear. Tony Giglio wrote the screenplay, and Paul W. S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt and Mike Elliott produced. Luke Goss plays Lucas, the role connected to the Frankenstein driver later seen in the series. Lauren Cohan appears as September Jones, with Sean Bean, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames and Tanit Phoenix among a credited cast of 39.
Made for about 7 million dollars in Germany and South Africa, the film drew modest audience scores: 5.6 on IMDb from roughly 36,000 votes and 5.9 on TMDB from just over 1,200. A critics' rating of 3.9 from six reviews sits below both.
