Sancaka has survived on Jakarta's streets since his parents left him, learning that keeping his head down and looking after himself is the safest way to stay alive. When the city falls further under the grip of brutal gangs and injustice spreads across the country, he faces a choice between continuing to protect only himself and standing up for those who cannot defend themselves. The answer comes partly through a supernatural force that turns him into the masked figure known as Gundala, celebrated by ordinary people and hunted by criminals.
The film is directed and written by Joko Anwar, who had previously made Satan's Slaves and would follow Gundala the same year with Impetigore. It is an Indonesian production from Legacy Pictures, Screenplay Films, Bumilangit Studios and Ideosource Entertainment, made for about two million dollars and earning roughly five million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Abimana Aryasatya plays the adult Sancaka, with Muzakki Ramdhan as the young Sancaka, Tara Basro as Wulan, Bront Palarae as Pengkor and Ario Bayu as Ghazul. The cast runs to sixty-nine credited performers.
On IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 6,200 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from 345 votes, indicating moderate audience approval. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from eight reviews places it somewhat above those viewer scores.
