Set in an alternate Edo period where alien invaders known as the Amanto have taken over Japan, the story follows Gintoki Sakata, a former rebel fighter who now runs an odd-jobs business called Yorozuya with his young companions Shinpachi and Kagura. Short on money and struggling to make rent, the group takes on work where they cross paths with the shogun. Meanwhile, the Shinsengumi police force, led by Isao Kondo, is divided by internal conflict that conceals a plot against the shogun, drawing the Yorozuya into the effort to protect him.
The film is the second live-action adaptation of the Gintama manga, following the 2017 film. Yuichi Fukuda returned as director and also wrote the screenplay, working with producers Shinzo Matsuhashi and Susumu Hieda. Shun Oguri again plays Gintoki, joined by Masaki Suda as Shinpachi, Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura, Masami Nagasawa as Tae Shimura, Masaki Okada as Kotaro Katsura and Jiro Sato as Henpeita Takechi. It was released in Japan in August 2018 and ran 134 minutes, mixing action and comedy with fantasy and science fiction elements.
The film sits between Fukuda's first Gintama adaptation and his later work Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, part of a run that also includes Once Upon a Crime, Under Ninja and Sakamoto Days. It grossed about 31 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from roughly 1,300 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 7.1 from a much smaller number of votes.
