Slovo House is a documentary that examines the history of a residential building in 1920s Ukraine. Originally established with the approval of Stalin as a sanctuary for intellectuals, poets, and playwrights, the complex provided modern amenities for its cultural residents. However, the site eventually functioned as a tool for the Soviet regime to monitor and oppress the inhabitants. The film details how this gathering of artists was systematically targeted and destroyed by the state.
The film was directed by Taras Tomenko, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Liubov Yakymchuk and Yaryna Tsymbal. This project marks the first of two listed films in Tomenko's career, followed by the 2024 production Slovo House. Unfinished Novel. The production was handled by the Ukrainian State Film Agency and Fresh Production Group, with Yuliia Cherniavska serving as producer. Slava Krasovska appears in the cast as Natalia Uzhvii. The movie was released on November 9, 2017, with a total runtime of 81 minutes.
