Germinal

Germinal is set in the coalfields of northern France during the mid-nineteenth century. Étienne Lantier, a young man without work, arrives in the mining town of Montsou and is hired as a miner on a team led by Toussaint Maheu. He comes to know the hardship of the miners and their families, who labour underground for low pay and live in poverty, and he falls in love with Maheu's daughter Catherine. Drawn to socialist ideas, he urges the discontented workers to organize. When the mine owners move to cut wages, a strike becomes unavoidable, setting capital against labour and bringing down repression on the miners.

Claude Berri directed, produced and co-wrote the film with Arlette Langmann. It came seven years after his two-part adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring, and he returned to directing features only in 2007 with Hunting & Gathering. The cast is led by Renaud as Étienne Lantier, with Gérard Depardieu as Toussaint Maheu, Miou-Miou as La Maheude, Judith Henry as Catherine, Jean-Roger Milo as Chaval and Jean Carmet as Bonnemort, among 38 credited performers.

Released in September 1993, the film runs 160 minutes and was a co-production between France, Belgium and Italy. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 6,100 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from roughly 349 votes, indicating a solid and fairly consistent response from viewers across both platforms.
