Carl Vanderveer, once a follower of the Grateful Dead, has become a born-again Christian and a member of a prosperous mega-church led by the charismatic pastor Dan Day. His life takes a sharp turn when he witnesses the pastor accidentally kill an atheist doctor and then try to pass the death off as a suicide. Because of Carl's disreputable past, nobody believes his account, and he soon finds himself pursued by church fundamentalists determined to shield their pastor at any cost.
George Ratliff directed the film, his second feature after Joshua in 2007 and before Welcome Home in 2018, and wrote the screenplay with Douglas Stone. Greg Kinnear plays Carl, with Jennifer Connelly as his wife Gwen, Pierce Brosnan as Dan Day, Ed Harris as the dead doctor, Marisa Tomei as Honey Foster and Isabelle Fuhrman as Angie Vandermeer. The production had a budget of about 6 million dollars.
Released in 2011, the film runs 96 minutes and mixes action, comedy, drama and thriller elements. Its reception was modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from more than 4,700 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.3 from a small number of votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 36 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
