Escape Room

Six strangers each receive a mysterious invitation to take part in an escape room, with a large cash prize promised to whoever comes out on top. They accept, believing their intelligence sets them apart from ordinary players. Once inside, the puzzles prove far more dangerous than advertised, and the contestants come to understand that they were selected for reasons of their own and that losing carries a fatal cost.

Adam Robitel directed the film, his third feature after The Taking of Deborah Logan and Insidious: The Last Key, from a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik. Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Deborah Ann Woll, Nik Dodani and Tyler Labine play the participants. Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur produced for Columbia Pictures and Original Film, and the credited production counted 31 cast members and 115 crew.

Made for about 9 million dollars, the film took in roughly 156 million worldwide, a return that far exceeded its production cost and helped launch a follow-up, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, which Robitel directed two years later. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 159,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from more than 5,000. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 165 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
