Words on Bathroom Walls centres on Adam, a teenager whose life is upended when he is diagnosed with a mental illness during his final year of high school. He tries to hide his condition from classmates while coping with hallucinations and the strain it places on his family, and he falls for Maya, a bright and outspoken classmate who encourages him not to let his diagnosis define him. The film follows his effort to finish school, manage his treatment and trust someone else even when he struggles to trust himself.
Thor Freudenthal directed the drama, his fourth feature after Hotel for Dogs, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Nick Naveda wrote the screenplay, and Freudenthal produced with Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon. Charlie Plummer plays Adam, with Taylor Russell as Maya, Molly Parker as Beth, Walton Goggins as Paul, Andy García as Father Patrick and AnnaSophia Robb as Rebecca, among 24 credited cast members.
Released in August 2020, the film runs 111 minutes. It was made for about 8 million dollars and took roughly 3 million worldwide, a modest return against its cost. Reception has been warmer than that suggests: a critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 93 reviews sits just under an IMDb average of 7.2 from around 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.8 from roughly 670 votes.
