Short description

Crown Vic follows two Los Angeles police officers through a single night shift in the department's Olympic Division. Ray Mandel is a veteran patrolman worn down by the job, and Nick Holland is a new recruit whose first outing on the streets becomes far more dangerous than either expects. Two cop killers are at large and looking for more targets, while a rogue officer named Jack VanZandt pursues his own vendetta in the same patrol zone. Amid the pursuit of a missing girl and the ordinary calls that make up a patrol, the evening turns increasingly volatile.

Joel Souza wrote and directed the film, his first feature as director, followed later by Rust. Thomas Jane plays Mandel and Luke Kleintank plays Holland, with Josh Hopkins as VanZandt, David Krumholtz as Stroke Adams, Bridget Moynahan as Tracy Peters and Scottie Thompson as Claire. The production, mounted for about four million dollars, was a British, American and Taiwanese co-production.

Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 from roughly 9,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from far fewer votes, suggesting a small but reasonably satisfied viewership. A film critics' rating of 5.9 from 26 reviews places professional opinion slightly below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Joel Souza (director and screenwriter) wrote the screenplay in 10 days. In April 2016, it was announced that Alec Baldwin and Scott Eastwood would star in the film, but in May 2018, those roles went to Thomas Jane and Luke Kleintank. Baldwin left the cast but remained as a producer.
  • Outside the US, the film was released under different titles: in Australia as 'To Protect and Serve', in Germany as 'In the Web of Violence', and in the UK as 'Bulletproof'.
  • The final scene contains an incorrect quote. Those words do not appear in George Orwell's novel '1984'.
  • The film's original title, Crown Vic, is a reference to the Ford Crown Victoria car used by Ray and Nick.
