Underworld: Awakening
Short description
Underworld: Awakening continues the story of Selene, a vampire warrior who wakes after more than a decade in a coma-like state and finds the world transformed. Humans have learned that vampires and Lycans exist and have launched a campaign to eliminate both species. Held in a laboratory run by the biotech corporation Antigen, Selene also learns she has a daughter, Eve, a hybrid of vampire and Lycan. Her attempt to find Michael, her partner, is complicated by the changed world around her, and she must protect Eve from Lycans who want to use the girl to overcome their weakness to silver.
The film is directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, whose previous feature together was 6 Souls in 2010; this is the second film in each director's listed career. Len Wiseman, J. Michael Straczynski and Allison Burnett wrote the screenplay, with Wiseman also producing alongside Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi. Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, joined by Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley and Charles Dance.
Made for 70 million dollars, the film took in about 160 million dollars worldwide, a return that reflects its place as a mid-budget genre release. Audience ratings sit at 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 167,000 votes and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from around 4,500 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 76 reviews is noticeably lower than those audience scores.
