Mulk centres on a Muslim family living in Varanasi whose comfortable, respected life is shattered when the youngest member becomes involved with terrorists and carries out a bombing that kills many people. The family is left to prove that it is neither complicit nor disloyal, as neighbours, officials and the wider public begin to treat them as suspects. The retired, deeply religious patriarch, Murad Ali Mohammed, finds his reputation and freedom under threat, and it falls to his daughter-in-law, a lawyer, to defend him and the family's standing.
Anubhav Sinha directed and wrote the film, which was produced by Sinha and Deepak Mukut and released in August 2018. It falls between Dus, Cash and Ra.One and his later Article 15, Anek and Assi. Rishi Kapoor leads the cast as Murad, with Taapsee Pannu as Aarti, alongside Prateik Smita Patil, Rajat Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana and Manoj Pahwa.
Made for about 3 million dollars, the film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes; a critics' score of 6.8 from 10 reviews sits closer to the IMDb figure than to the TMDB one.
