Five Feet Apart
Short description
Five Feet Apart centres on Stella, a seventeen-year-old who has spent much of her life in hospital because of cystic fibrosis. Her days follow a strict routine of treatments and self-control, and she keeps her distance from other patients to avoid the risk of infection. That discipline is tested when she meets Will, a fellow teenager with the same illness, and the two are drawn to each other almost immediately. Because their conditions make close contact dangerous, they must stay apart even as their feelings grow, and Stella also finds herself trying to keep Will engaged with the treatment he has grown weary of.
The film was directed by Justin Baldoni, his first feature, followed by Clouds and It Ends with Us. Tobias Iaconis and Mikki Daughtry wrote the screenplay, and Cathy Schulman and Baldoni produced. Haley Lu Richardson plays Stella and Cole Sprouse plays Will, with Moisés Arias, Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Parminder Nagra and Claire Forlani in supporting roles. It runs 116 minutes and was released in March 2019.
Made for about 7 million dollars, it took roughly 93 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 96,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 8.2 from about 6,000 votes, a higher audience figure. A critics' rating of 5.6 from 130 reviews places it well below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The filmmakers worked closely with Claire's Place Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping those with life-limiting illnesses, founded by Claire Wineland (1997-2018). The film's authors and actors tried to describe cystic fibrosis (a systemic hereditary disease caused by a mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene and characterized by damage to the glands of external secretion) as accurately as possible.
- The film states that the main characters must stay 1.5 meters apart. Later, Stella says she wants to steal one meter from the disease, reducing the distance to the length of a cue (1.42 meters), but it becomes unclear which meter Stella stole, given the difference is only 8 centimeters. In fact, the issue stems from an incorrect translation adaptation and different systems of measurement. The distance that cystic fibrosis patients must maintain is 6 feet (1.83 meters), while the length of a cue is 4.66 feet (1.42 meters), meaning Stella reduced the distance by 1.34 feet (0.41 meters), which is what she “stole from the disease.”
