The Photographer of Mauthausen

The Photographer of Mauthausen is a Spanish-Hungarian historical drama centred on Francesc Boix, a Catalan photographer and Republican who was deported to the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp during the Second World War. Assigned to work in the SS photographic laboratory, Boix and a group of Spanish prisoners involved in the camp's clandestine organisation secretly preserve thousands of negatives documenting the crimes committed there, at great personal risk. The images they managed to save later served as evidence in the Nuremberg trials.

Directed by Mar Targarona from a screenplay by Roger Danès and Alfred Pérez-Fargas, the film was her second feature, following Boy Missing in 2016 and preceding Two and The Cuckoo's Curse. Mario Casas leads the cast as Boix, alongside Richard van Weyden, Alain Hernández, Adrià Salazar, Eduard Buch and Stefan Weinert, among 25 credited performers. The production was handled by companies including TVE, Rodar y Rodar, TV3 and Film Factory, with Targarona and Joaquín Padró producing.

Released in October 2018 and running 111 minutes, the film combines drama, history and thriller elements. Its worldwide box office of around 3 million dollars reflects a modest theatrical reach. Audience responses are comparable across platforms, with a 6.7 rating on IMDb from over 12,000 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB from a smaller sample. A critics' rating of 6.5 from eight reviews places professional assessments close to the audience averages.
