Adolpho Rollo is a young filmmaker in New York with grand ambitions and no money, not even enough to cover his rent. What he does have is a five-hundred-page screenplay that nobody seems willing to produce, and his affection for Angelica, a neighbor who barely notices him. When he advertises the script in a newspaper, the buyer turns out to be Joe, a small-time crook who becomes his producer and draws him into his shady dealings. The film's comedy comes from the gap between Adolpho's artistic hopes and the compromises the arrangement demands.
In the Soup was released in 1992, directed by Alexandre Rockwell, who wrote the screenplay with Sollace Mitchell. It was Rockwell's first feature of the three listed in the facts, followed by Four Rooms and The Projectionist. Steve Buscemi plays Adolpho, with Seymour Cassel as Joe and Jennifer Beals as Angelica, among a credited cast of twenty that includes Will Patton and Stanley Tucci. The production was an international effort involving companies from the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Japan.
The film holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from roughly 4,900 votes, and a 6.7 on TMDB from far fewer. The much smaller TMDB sample is close to the larger IMDb figure, suggesting broadly consistent audience approval.
