Midsommar
Short description
Midsommar follows a group of American friends who travel to a remote Swedish village for a summer festival that takes place only once every ninety years. One of them, Pelle, has invited them to his home community, and the visit begins as an idyllic getaway in a place where the sun barely sets. Dani, grieving a family tragedy and uncertain about her relationship with Christian, joins the trip. The villagers are welcoming at first, but their customs grow increasingly unsettling as preparations for a special midsummer ritual get underway.
Ari Aster wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Hereditary and the second of five features he has made to date. Florence Pugh plays Dani, with Jack Reynor as Christian and William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter, Vilhelm Blomgren and Isabelle Grill among the supporting cast. Lars Knudsen, Patrik Andersson and Beau Ferris produced the United States and Sweden co-production.
Made for about 9 million dollars, the film earned roughly 48 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 480,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.1, from a much smaller base of about 8,400 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 413 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores. The 147-minute film blends drama, horror and mystery.

- Before filming the movie, the director studied materials relating to ancient rituals and Viking customs.
- Numerous clues and hints about the further development of events can be seen on the wall frescoes. They even include images of rituals described in the screenplay but not included in the theatrical version of the film.
- The film was inspired by the director's personal experience of a breakup.
- The film initially received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA, but it was changed to R after re-editing. A total of over 30 minutes of scenes were cut.
