Short description
Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.

  • Midsummer is a Swedish holiday celebrating the summer solstice (literally, 'mid-summer'). It is celebrated on the Saturday closest to June 19th.
  • The director's cut of the film has a runtime of 170 minutes.
  • The film initially received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA, but it was changed to R after re-editing. A total of over 30 minutes of scenes were cut.
  • The film was inspired by the director's personal experience of a breakup.
  • Before filming the movie, the director studied materials relating to ancient rituals and Viking customs.
  • According to director Ari Aster, he drew inspiration for the film from the following works: «Scenes from a Marriage», «Dogville», «The Color of Pomegranates», «Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors», «Songs from the Second Floor», «Black Narcissus», «The Tales of Hoffmann», «Save the Green Planet!».
  • At the beginning of the film, students are sitting in a bar under a huge copy of the famous photograph of Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield.
  • Actor Jack Reynor admitted that he got drunk after filming the sex scene he was in.
  • Numerous clues and hints about the further development of events can be seen on the wall frescoes. They even include images of rituals described in the screenplay but not included in the theatrical version of the film.
