Roald Dahl's The Witches

In 1967, a orphaned boy arrives in the small Alabama town of Demopolis to live with his grandmother. He and his grandmother run into witches who appear glamorous but are in fact evil, so she takes the boy to a grand seaside hotel to keep him safe. Unfortunately, their stay coincides with a gathering of witches from around the world, called together by the Grand High Witch. The film is adapted from Roald Dahl's novel and is a fantasy comedy with horror elements, in which the witches look ordinary and must be identified by other means.

Robert Zemeckis directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris; Zemeckis also produced alongside Alfonso Cuarón and del Toro. It is the twenty-first of twenty-three films he has directed, between Welcome to Marwen and Pinocchio. Anne Hathaway plays the Grand High Witch, Octavia Spencer plays the grandmother, Stanley Tucci plays Mr. Stringer, and Jahzir Bruno plays the boy, with Chris Rock voicing the older version of him. The film runs 104 minutes and was made in the United Kingdom, Mexico and the United States.

Released in October 2020, it took about 29 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores sit at 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 51,000 votes and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 3,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 186 reviews places professional response slightly above the IMDb audience figure and below the TMDB one.
