Winter Flies follows two teenage boys, Mára and Heduš, who take an old car and set off across the Czech landscape in search of adventure. Mára is close to turning fifteen, confident and mischievous, while Heduš is more eccentric. Their journey becomes a road movie about boyhood friendship and the urge to experience something without quite knowing what. A policeman and a policewoman try to work out what happened on the trip, including where the car came from and what the boys were after.
The film is directed by Olmo Omerzu from a screenplay by Petr Pýcha, with Jiří Konečný producing. It was made as a co-production involving Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, France and the Czech Republic, and it runs 85 minutes. The cast includes Tomáš Mrvík as Mára Mikule, Jan František Uher as Heduš, Eliška Křenková as Brána, Zdeněk Mucha, Lenka Vlasáková and Martin Pechlát. It appeared in 2018, before Omerzu's Ungrateful Beings.
On IMDb, Winter Flies holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 517 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 20 votes. The larger IMDb sample points to a modest but settled level of approval, with viewers there somewhat warmer than the much smaller TMDB group. Blending comedy and drama, the film centers on the boys' winter journey and the adults trying to reconstruct it.
