Robert the Bruce
Short description
Robert the Bruce is a historical drama set in Scotland in 1306, after the country has fallen under English control. The newly crowned king, Robert the Bruce, suffers a crushing defeat and is forced into hiding. With a bounty on his head, abandoned by much of the Scottish nobility and hunted by the soldiers he once led, he finds refuge with a farming family, including a widow named Morag and her young son. Their shelter through a harsh winter helps him recover and gradually decide to renew the struggle for Scottish independence.
The film was directed by Richard Gray and written by Angus Macfadyen and Eric Belgau. Macfadyen, who also produced the film, plays Robert the Bruce; the cast additionally includes Anna Hutchison, Zach McGowan, Gabriel Bateman, Talitha Bateman and Brandon Lessard, among 28 credited cast members in all. It sits fourth in the chronological order of Gray's directed features, arriving between Sugar Mountain and Murder at Yellowstone City.
Reception among viewers has been mixed. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 5,700 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.5 out of 10, from around 140 ratings, indicating a modest response from the audiences who have seen it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Due to financial considerations, the film was shot primarily in the state of Montana. Winters in Scotland during the period depicted were harsh, so corresponding shots were taken in the snow-covered mountains near the Yellowstone River valley north of Yellowstone National Park.
- According to Angus Macfadyen (the screenwriter and performer of Robert the Bruce), he began writing the script 12 years before filming began in February 2019.
