Elisa & Marcela

Elisa and Marcela meet while working as teachers in Spain at the start of the twentieth century. Their friendship develops into a love they have to keep hidden, and when Marcela's parents become suspicious, they send her abroad for several years. After the two women are reunited, they decide to build a life together, but their relationship draws constant gossip and disapproval. Their solution is for Elisa to leave the city and return disguised as a man, allowing the couple to marry.

The film is a drama directed by Isabel Coixet, who also wrote the screenplay with Narciso de Gabriel. It follows a run of features from Coixet that includes The Bookshop and Endless Night, and it came before Un amor and Three Goodbyes. Natalia de Molina plays Elisa, and Greta Fernández plays Marcela. The supporting cast includes Sara Casasnovas, Tamar Novas, María Pujalte and Francesc Orella, among a credited cast of 41.
