Passport to Paris
Short description
Passport to Paris follows thirteen-year-old American twins Melanie and Allyson Porter, who travel to Paris to spend a week with their grandfather Edward, the United States ambassador to France. Since he has little time for them, he assigns his assistant, Jeremy Bluff, to keep them occupied with museums and official outings. The girls keep slipping away from his supervision, explore the city by scooter, and eventually meet two French boys their own age, Jean and Michel, which turns the formal trip into a more independent adventure.
The film was directed by Alan Metter, whose earlier work includes Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Back to School and Police Academy: Mission to Moscow; it is the fourth feature in that filmography. Craig Shapiro and Elizabeth Kruger wrote the screenplay, Neil Steinberg produced, and the cast of twenty-two is led by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen as the twins, with Peter White as Grandpa Edward, Matt Winston as Jeremy Bluff, Yvonne Sciò as Brigitte and Brocker Way as Jean.
Released in November 1999 and running eighty-seven minutes, the comedy is aimed at a family audience. Its ratings sit in mixed territory: on IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 319 votes, a smaller and somewhat warmer sample.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Ellie and Melanie first sit down at the ambassador's dining table, you can see them placing snails on their forks to throw at the butler.
- When the twins replace the Rodin Museum with the Luxembourg Garden on the computer, you can notice how carefully Ellie presses the letter “H” on the keyboard. However, this letter is not in the phrase “Luxembourg Garden”.
- When the twins enter, they stand on the right in the hallway, and then the grandfather comes down, and to get into the frame they have to stand on the left.
- As Jeremy exits the door and walks past the car, you can see a person holding a microphone.
- When Ellie, Melanie, and their grandfather look out of the limousine hatch, Ellie has a “v” drawn on her dress. But it’s not there in the next scene.
- At the very beginning of the film, when Melanie (MK) introduces herself and her sister, she opens her locker. Then she walks away, but doesn't close the locker!
- When Jeremy asks Ellie and Melanie to open the car door, you could see his reflection in the mirror. And it was visible that throughout all of this, he didn’t even open his mouth.
- When they go to the bakery, they only buy 2 loaves of bread, but when they fight, they fence with everything. So, it turns out they had 2 more loaves.
- When the girls get out of the car in Paris, Ashley starts taking out her glasses case, then they show Jeremy, then Ashley is just standing there, they show Jeremy again, and then Ashley takes out the case again.
- After the twins danced on the bed and then jumped off, the bed remained undisturbed.
- When Mary-Kate and Ashley start jumping on the bed, we see a pillow fall, then that same pillow falls again, and when the grandfather enters, it's lying in a completely different place.
- In the scene where Ellie ordered 2 drinks for herself and MK, the waitress brought her 1 fish. But Ashley also ordered 2.
- As they walk through the Louvre, they pass by one sculpture (a guy on a rock). But that sculpture is actually in the Rodin Museum.
- In the first dinner scene, when the girls fling snails at the butler, the snail is still on Melanie’s fork.
- The chef says his snails must be cooked precisely at 139 degrees, and later he says his snails must be cooked at 118 degrees.
