Maharshi centres on K. Rishi Kumar, a man who leaves India for the United States with ambitions of building a fortune and succeeds, becoming a billionaire and CEO of a company called Origins. In the course of reaching that position he departs from the principles he grew up with and turns his back on people who had helped him along the way, including those closest to him, notably his friend Ravi Shankar. When Ravi needs his assistance, Rishi must decide how far he is willing to go for a friend he once let down. The film also follows his return to India, where he faces the consequences of the choices he made abroad.
Vamshi Paidipally directed and wrote the screenplay, working from a story credited to him, and the film sits between Varisu and Monster in his directing credits. Mahesh Babu plays Rishi, with Pooja Hegde as Pooja, Allari Naresh as Ravi, Jagapati Babu as Vivek Mittal, and Prakash Raj and Jayasudha as Rishi's parents. Produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations, PVP Cinema and Vyjayanthi Movies, it runs 176 minutes and was made for around 12 million dollars.
The film took roughly 32 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from about 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6/10 from a much smaller sample of 40 votes.
