A police crisis negotiator is called back to duty after a botched rescue ends in the deaths of hostages. She intends to resign, but a kidnapping pulls her in: a weapons dealer is holding a senior officer and a Korean journalist captive in Thailand. The kidnapper makes no demands and stays unusually calm, and the negotiator has only hours to work out what he actually wants before an elite squad storms the site. The title is The Negotiation, a 2018 Korean action crime thriller running 114 minutes.
Lee Jong-suk directed the film, his first, followed later by Forbidden Fairytale and Believe. Son Ye-jin plays the negotiator Ha Chae-yoon, with Hyun Bin as the kidnapper Min Tae-gu, supported by Kim Sang-ho, Jang Young-nam, Jang Gwang and Jo Young-jin among a cast of twenty-two. Choi Sung-hyun wrote the screenplay and Lee Sang-jik produced for CJ Entertainment and JK Film. The film took about 15 million dollars worldwide.
It rates 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,500 votes and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB from 167 votes, an audience response that is positive but not enthusiastic. A critics' score of 7 out of 10 from five reviews places professional opinion close to the audience average.
