The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice centres on the marriage of Taeko, a Tokyo society woman, and Mokichi, a company executive raised in the countryside. Their union was arranged, and Taeko treats her husband with indifference, finding him dull beside the pleasures she pursues with friends. Mokichi absorbs her coldness without complaint. When Taeko's niece Setsuko is pressed toward an arranged match of her own, she resists the prospect of a marriage as hollow as her aunt's, which forces Taeko to look at what her own has become.
Yasujirō Ozu directed and co-wrote the film with Kōgo Noda, working with producer Takeshi Yamamoto for Shochiku. It stands ninth among the sixteen features Ozu directed, arriving between Early Summer and Tokyo Story. Shin Saburi and Michiyo Kogure play the couple, with Koji Tsuruta, Chikage Awashima, Keiko Tsushima and Eijirō Yanagi among the twenty credited cast members. The film runs 116 minutes.
Reception on IMDb, where it holds 7.6 from roughly 4,300 votes, and on TMDB, at 7.5 from a smaller group of 108 voters, indicates a solid reputation that rests on a modest but consistent base of viewers.
