Horrible Histories: The Movie — Rotten Romans

Horrible Histories: The Movie — Rotten Romans follows Atti, a clever Roman teenager whose knack for scheming lands him in serious trouble when one of his plans offends Emperor Nero. As punishment, he is packed off to the cold, damp province of Britain at the edge of the empire. There he is captured by Orla, a fiery young Celt determined to prove herself as a warrior. The two form an unlikely friendship, but circumstances push them toward opposite sides of the growing revolt led by the Iceni queen Boudicca, forcing Atti to choose where his loyalties lie. The film is a big-screen extension of the Horrible Histories children's history brand.

Dominic Brigstocke directed from a screenplay by Jessica Swale, working with a credited cast of fifty-one and a crew of forty-five. Sebastian Croft plays Atti and Emilia Jones plays Orla, with Kate Nash as Boudicca, Nick Frost as Arghus, Craig Roberts as Nero and Kim Cattrall as Agrippina. Released in July 2019, the film runs ninety-two minutes and mixes adventure, comedy and family viewing. Its worldwide box office came to about four million dollars, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 3,800 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 83 votes, suggesting a limited but reasonably consistent response from those who saw it.
