Alvin, Simon and Theodore, along with the Chipettes, are on a luxury cruise when their mischief gets out of hand and all six of them end up overboard. They wash ashore on what appears to be a deserted tropical island, and while Dave searches for them, they set about exploring their new surroundings. It soon becomes clear that the island is not as empty as it first seemed, and the group encounters another castaway whose bold personality pulls them into their first real adventure.
Mike Mitchell directed the film, which sits between Shrek Forever After and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in his filmography. Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel wrote the screenplay, and Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. and Janice Karman produced. The live-action cast includes Jason Lee as Dave, David Cross as Ian and Jenny Slate as Zoe, with Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney voicing Alvin, Simon and Theodore.
Released in December 2011, the film cost about 75 million US dollars to make and took roughly 343 million US dollars worldwide, a strong return against its budget. Audience response was modest: it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 44,000 votes and 5.7 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 79 reviews places it below even the audience scores.
