Another Earth

On the eve of a remarkable astronomical discovery, two strangers are set on a collision course. Rhoda Williams is a gifted young woman who has just been accepted into an astrophysics program, while John Burroughs is a composer enjoying the height of his career and preparing for the birth of his second child. On the same night that scientists announce a duplicate Earth has appeared in the solar system, a tragedy binds the two together, reshaping both of their lives in ways neither could have anticipated.

Released in 2011, Another Earth is the first feature directed by Mike Cahill, who also wrote and produced it with Brit Marling. Marling stars as Rhoda, with William Mapother as John, and the supporting cast includes Meggan Lennon, AJ Diana, Matthew-Lee Erlbach and Kumar Pallana. The film balances its science-fiction premise against an intimate drama of guilt and loss.

Audience response to the film has been moderately positive: on IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 104,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from a much smaller pool of roughly 1,870 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3/10 from 133 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores. Produced independently, the film earned about 2 million dollars worldwide. Cahill went on to direct I Origins and Bliss.
