All Is True

All Is True is set in 1613, when William Shakespeare is at the height of his fame but his theatre, the Globe, burns to the ground. He gives up writing and goes back to Stratford-upon-Avon, the town he left behind two decades earlier. His wife Anne and their daughters Judith and Susanna are startled when he announces that he means to stay for good. Once home, he has to reckon with the family he neglected, the grief he still carries over the death of his only son, and the strain his long absence placed on his marriage and his role as a father.

Kenneth Branagh directed the film, the fourteenth of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Murder on the Orient Express and preceding Artemis Fowl. Ben Elton wrote the screenplay, and Branagh produced with Ted Gagliano and Tamar Thomas. Branagh himself plays Shakespeare, with Judi Dench as Anne, Ian McKellen as the Earl of Southampton, Kathryn Wilder as Judith, Lydia Wilson as Susanna and Hadley Fraser as John Hall, among a credited cast of thirty-one.

Released in December 2018, the British drama runs 101 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 6.3 from roughly 6,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from 149 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.6 from 142 reviews places it slightly above those audience scores.
