Downhill

Downhill follows an American family on a skiing holiday in the Alps. A planned avalanche interrupts a meal at a mountainside restaurant, and in the panic Pete Stanton runs off, leaving his wife Billie and their two children behind. Nobody is hurt, but the incident lodges itself in the family's life. Billie begins to question her husband and the marriage, while the couple and their children are left reassessing how they see one another. The film is a comedy-drama about a single moment of cowardice and the arguments that follow.

Nat Faxon and Jim Rash directed, working from a screenplay they wrote with Jesse Armstrong. It is the second feature the pair directed together, arriving seven years after The Way Way Back. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Billie and Will Ferrell plays Pete, with Zach Woods, Miranda Otto, Giulio Berruti and Zoe Chao among the supporting cast. Louis-Dreyfus also produced.

The film was released in February 2020 and took in about 9 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 4.9 out of 10 from roughly 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 215 reviews places it close to the audience scores, with neither group responding warmly.
