Mari Gilbert's daughter Shannan vanishes after making a frantic call from a coastal area of Long Island. Frustrated by the police response, Mari begins searching for her herself, retracing Shannan's last movements through a gated community on the island's fringe. What she uncovers draws attention to a series of killings of sex workers in the area, and to the young women whose cases had gone largely unnoticed. The film is based on true events.
Liz Garbus directed, working from a screenplay by Michael Werwie. It is the second of five features listed for Garbus, following Love, Marilyn and preceding Becoming Cousteau. Amy Ryan plays Mari, with Thomasin McKenzie as her daughter Sherre, Lola Kirke as Kim, Gabriel Byrne as investigator Richard Dormer, Oona Laurence as Sarra Gilbert and Dean Winters as Dean Bostick.
Released in early 2020, the film runs 95 minutes and sits between drama, history, mystery and thriller. It drew modest audiences: on IMDb it holds 6.2 from around 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from roughly 772 votes, a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 57 reviews places professional response close to the audience scores, with all three measures landing in similar territory rather than pulling apart.
