An FBI agent and a struggling Taiwanese police officer team up to investigate a series of bizarre murders in Taipei. The victims, who appear to have no connection to one another, die in hallucinatory states caused by a mysterious fungus embedded in their brains. As the pair tracks a serial killer, they must navigate a city where modern technology exists alongside ancient superstitions and spiritual beliefs. The local detective, Huang Huo-tu, faces personal turmoil and professional isolation after exposing corruption within his own department.
Directed by Kuo-Fu Chen, this horror-mystery was the first of two films he directed, followed by The Message in 2009. The movie was produced by companies including Columbia Pictures and Nan Fang Film Productions. The cast features Tony Leung Ka-fai as the local detective, René Liu, and David Morse as the FBI agent. Other credited performers include Leon Dai, Yang Kuei-Mei, and Sihung Lung.
