From Hell

Set in London's Whitechapel district in 1888, the film follows Scotland Yard inspector Fred Abberline as he investigates a series of murders of local prostitutes. The killer, soon known as Jack the Ripper, strikes with anatomical precision, and Abberline comes to believe the crimes are staged and connected to a wider conspiracy rather than the work of an ordinary madman. His superiors show more interest in containing the scandal than in finding the culprit. Abberline's intuition is sharpened by drug use, which brings him visions of the killings, and he gains the trust of Mary Kelly, a young Irish prostitute who knew several of the victims and helps him in his inquiry. The story draws on Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's graphic novel.

From Hell was directed by Albert Hughes, one of the Hughes brothers, and was their third feature, arriving between Dead Presidents and The Book of Eli; Allen Hughes shares the directing credit on the same three films. Terry Hayes and Rafael Yglesias wrote the screenplay, and Jane Hamsher and Don Murphy produced. Johnny Depp plays Abberline, with Heather Graham as Mary Kelly, Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Richardson and Jason Flemyng in supporting roles.

Made for about 35 million dollars, the film took roughly 75 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 171,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from over 3,000; a critics' rating of 5.9 from 151 reviews puts it somewhat below the audience scores.
