A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters follows Su-mi and Su-yeon, two sisters who come home to their father's house after a long stay in a psychiatric hospital, following their mother's death. Their father's new wife, Eun-joo, is waiting for them, and the relationship between the stepmother and the girls is tense from the start: Su-mi is openly hostile toward her, while the younger Su-yeon keeps her distance in fear. Strange things begin to happen in the house, and the sisters come to believe that someone or something else is present there. Their father seems unable or unwilling to acknowledge what they experience, leaving the two girls increasingly isolated as the household atmosphere darkens and the boundary between what is real and what is not becomes uncertain.

Kim Jee-woon directed and wrote the screenplay; it is the second of the ten films he has directed, arriving between The Quiet Family and A Bittersweet Life. Lim Soo-jung plays Su-mi, Moon Geun-young plays Su-yeon, Yum Jung-ah plays Eun-joo, Kim Kap-soo plays Moo-hyeon, and Park Mi-hyun and Lee Seung-bi appear as the birth mother and Mi-hee. The film was produced by Oh Jung-wan, Oh Ki-min and Kim Jung-hwa.

Made for about 4 million USD, the film has taken roughly 1 million USD worldwide. It holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 74,000 votes and the same on TMDB from about 1,395 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 65 reviews, marginally above the audience scores.
