Peter Ibbetson

Peter Ibbetson and Mary, known as Mimsey, grow up as inseparable friends near Paris until the death of Peter's mother separates them. He goes to England to live with a strict uncle, takes on his mother's surname, and in time becomes a successful architect. As an adult he has little interest in women, but a commission from the Duke and Duchess of Towers brings him back into contact with the duchess, who turns out to be his childhood friend. The duke's suspicion of the pair puts their reunion at risk.

Henry Hathaway directed this 1935 Paramount production, the first of the eighteen films credited to him in chronological order, with Brigham Young following in 1940. The screenplay is by Vincent Lawrence and Waldemar Young, and Louis D. Lighton produced. Gary Cooper plays Peter, with Ann Harding as Mary, Duchess of Towers, John Halliday as the duke, Ida Lupino as Agnes, Douglass Dumbrille as Colonel Forsythe, and Virginia Weidler as the young Mimsey. Twenty-nine cast members are credited across the 88-minute film, which blends drama, romance and fantasy.
