Megamind has taken on the role of Metro City's defender, and on his first day in the job he and his friend Minion are clearing out the gadgets left over from his villainous past. Among the items is a button that looks harmless enough, but pressing it awakens a giant robot, MEGA-MEGAmind, and the pair must fall back on their old tricks to set things right.
The short film is a DreamWorks Animation production directed by Simon J. Smith, working from a screenplay by Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons. It follows Shrek 3-D and Bee Movie in Smith's directing work, and came before Penguins of Madagascar in 2014. Will Ferrell and David Cross return to voice Megamind and Minion, the roles they played in the 2010 feature, with supporting voice work from Michelle Belforte, Jordan Alexander Hauser, Kevin Bailey and Dante James Hauser.
The Button of Doom runs sixteen minutes and belongs to the same action-comedy and family animation territory as the film it continues. Audience response has been mild to positive: on IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from roughly 3,700 votes, and on TMDB a 6.7 from 284 votes. Both figures suggest a short that fans of the character receive reasonably well without the broader reach of a theatrical feature.
