Blue Sky follows Hank Marshall, an Army engineer and nuclear science expert stationed on bases in 1950s America. Hank's growing objections to the safety of the weapons testing program put him at odds with his superiors, who would prefer he keep quiet. His wife Carly, restless and drawn to provocation, adds to the friction wherever the family is posted. The strain between Hank's professional stand and Carly's behavior drives the couple's story.
Tony Richardson directed the film, the tenth in the chronological list of his features that began with The Entertainer in 1960 and includes Tom Jones and The Hotel New Hampshire. Jessica Lange plays Carly, with Tommy Lee Jones as Hank; Powers Boothe, Carrie Snodgress, Amy Locane and Chris O'Donnell appear in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Rama Laurie Stagner, Arlene Sarner and Jerry Leichtling, and Robert H. Solo produced for Orion Pictures and Heathrow Productions.
Released in September 1994 and running 101 minutes, the film is a drama with a strong romantic thread. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 154 votes, a modest reception from a limited number of viewers.
