Short description

Reminiscence is set in a near-future Miami that has been largely swallowed by rising seas. Nick Bannister, a solitary veteran, runs a business that lets clients revisit their own memories using a specialized tank. His assistant Watts works alongside him. When a woman named Mae comes in asking for help finding misplaced keys, a routine session turns into a romance, and then into an obsession once she disappears. Searching for her, Nick uncovers a violent conspiracy and is forced to confront what he is willing to do to hold on to someone he loves.

The film was written and directed by Lisa Joy, marking her feature debut behind the camera. It stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira and Daniel Wu. Jonathan Nolan, Aaron Ryder and Michael De Luca produced, with Warner Bros. Pictures among the production companies.

Released in August 2021, the movie runs 116 minutes. Made for a reported 68 million dollars, it earned about 16 million worldwide, a wide gap between its cost and its returns. Reception has been mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from around 2,000 ratings. The critics' score of 5 out of 10 from 199 reviews puts it close to the audience verdict rather than sharply below it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Unlike Michael Gracey's musical 'The Greatest Showman' (2017), Rebecca Ferguson was given the opportunity to showcase her vocal abilities in this project.
  • The scenes in the amusement park were filmed at the abandoned 'Jazzland' park in New Orleans. It fell victim to Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and has not reopened since.
  • The original screenplay by Lisa Joy (who also directed the film) was on the so-called 'Black List' of 2013 – a list of promising but unrealized screenplays.
