Short description
The King of Staten Island centres on Scott, a man in his mid-twenties living with his mother on Staten Island. His father, a firefighter, died when Scott was seven, and he has drifted since, smoking weed, spending time with his friends Oscar, Igor and Richie, and carrying on a secret relationship with his childhood friend Kelsey. He dreams of a career as a tattoo artist. His younger sister Claire is leaving for college, while Scott remains at home with his mother Margie, an overworked nurse. When Margie begins dating Ray, a firefighter with a loud manner, Scott is pushed to confront the grief he has long avoided.
The film is Judd Apatow's sixth directed feature, following Trainwreck in 2015. He wrote the screenplay with Pete Davidson and Dave Sirus, and produced it with Barry Mendel through Apatow Productions, with Universal Pictures and Perfect World Pictures. Davidson plays Scott; Marisa Tomei plays Margie, Bill Burr plays Ray, Bel Powley plays Kelsey, Maude Apatow plays Claire, and Steve Buscemi plays Papa. Around sixty cast members and more than a hundred crew are credited.
Made for a budget of 35 million US dollars, the film took in roughly 2 million dollars worldwide at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from about 82,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 from around 1,172 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 6.9 from 293 reviews, placing the critical and audience responses close together.
What's left behind the scenes
- Like his character's father, Pete Davidson's father was also a firefighter and died in the line of duty. His Brooklyn unit was dispatched to the World Trade Center ruins immediately after the September 11 attacks, and Davidson's father perished. The future actor was 7 years old at the time. The film states that the main character's father died in a fire at a hotel building, not immediately after the September 11 attacks.
- Steve Buscemi, who plays a firefighter, actually served in a fire department in his youth. From 1980 to 1984, he was a firefighter at Station 55 in Manhattan, and then resigned to dedicate himself fully to his acting career. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Buscemi (who was already a well-known actor) returned to Station 55 and volunteered in the search operations in the rubble of the World Trade Center towers. In June 2020, Buscemi told Derek Lawrence (1941-2020) that he played a firefighter for the first time in his life in the film 'The King of Staten Island'.
